Leadership Skills

Coming to Creighton was an act of God, a serious gift that fell into my lap and developed into a place very near and dear to my heart. Being accepted into the Freshmen Leadership Program was, also, an act of God. I had completely missed the deadline due to my indecisiveness. That decision, too, fell into my lap just a week prior actually to coming to a campus: I had not visited, I knew little about the university, and it was about to be my home for the next four years. Therefore, I expected nothing less than an act of God upon my arrival to this amazing institution. I still remember during welcome week being introduced to all six Jesuit values: Unity of Mind and Heart, Men and Women for and with others, Cura personalis, Magis, Ad maiorem Dei gloriam, and Agents for Change. I still can't even explain how much the Magis speech touched and struck home with me that day. This year, like many in the past, I have agreed to take on much more than I am capable of taking on. The Freshman Leadership Program has given me many different tools for appropriate planning and life strategizing. I've never actually had a personal mission statement helping to connect where I feel I can take my life to the physical development. I've become more self aware of who I am and where I view my life going. One place I never knew would have such a great impact was service and community activism. I regularly did service and philanthropy in high school, but never to this level. My first semester I got to go to the Omaha Boys and Girls Club in South Omaha. Coming from West Omaha, it was very eye opening seeing how much help Omaha actually needs. I got to be for and with others while acting as an agent for change. I feel as though everything I have done has been working Ad maiorem Dei gloriam, but recently things have taken a different turn. As I enter my college years my actions become real, but goals become concrete, and my life becomes meaningful. The Freshman Leadership Program has helped me realize my true potential and take my dreams as reality. One dream I never expected was going to Creighton and being apart of the Freshman Leadership Program, a turn of events that ended up being a true blessing.
